hmm - well you've got me wondering. . . .

I've got to keep working on mine. Hoping I can get it in as map entry #6. For some reason I like that number. Although I'd be beyond pleased to get it in as number 26 as well.

Here it is.
UPDATE: go RIGHT HERE! to see the good version.
The version that was previously posted looked like crap
IMO, you couldn't see any details and the shadings were
blurry.

As for the backstory to this ... it's just an old, ruined
down old manor estate. After a few hundred years the
fences fell down, the gatehouse burned down to the
foundation, and the main building slowly rotted away to
nothing, with the grand main hall being filled in by the
ever-expanding, fully wild garden. Eventually it was lost
from memory, except for the foundation of the gatehouse
within view of the new Imperial highway, and an overgrown
dirt track leading back to the estate family's graveyard.

However, as apparent by the trails still in good shape,
the ruins are not quite forgotten; probably local
children out on a dare, or some wandering adventurers
with some rumors of long-forgotten family heirlooms worth
a king's ransom ... though, for such infrequent visitors,
the dirt trails are well-traveled ...

Notes: I really wasn't aiming for a blunt 'horror' map,
but something more 'gothic horror' then 'modern horror'.
Gothic horror usually emphasizes emotion over thrills and
bloodshed, and I think Micah put it best as to what I was
aiming at:
"...that sun-is-setting-and-soon-you're-going-to-be-in-trouble feel."
That, to me, is more terrifying: you know that there's a
muderer with an axe in your standard slasher fare.
But here, what you don't know will kill you.

Very nice work, I love how you did the landscape with all the trees. The old ruin manor looks really good how you put the vines around it. The top left corner is the best part to me. Has a old, lost and forgotten look to it.

Great job

Worth the wait Lurker!
Very evocative. The shading on the trees is great! It gives the map that sun-is-setting-and-soon-you're-going-to-be-in-trouble feel.

Excellent work Lurky
Love the shadows on the trees and your use of details.

This map has such great potential as a table-map ... great work.

I definitely want that 100dpi export

I finally had time to export the 100dpi version, so if anyone would like a detailed version or something for your mini's to fight over, post and I'll send it out in batches. (If you don't have your email in your profile and don't want to post it, you can email me with the subject "Aug/Sept Gothic Contest Map". Please specify weather you want a .zip or a .rar, .rar's are preferred but not exclusive.)

Lurker, did you try uploading it to my site? I can change the allowed size if it's not big enough.

Situation update: Bludragn was kind enough to host the map on his site (thanks again, Blu!). You can find it:
http://mysite.verizon.net/res0gbg4/id28.html.

It's a medium-res pic (much better then the one here) in 100dpi--1" squares--for miniatures gaming .

Fantastic use of shadows! Just enough room for use as a battle map yet detailed enough to call attention to player "hot spots." Your best battlemap to date Lurky!!!
